Here And Now
5 Early Signs of Hearing Loss
Hearing is something we take for granted every day, until you start noticing changes. It can be difficult to notice the changes in quality of your hearing in the first stages of hearing loss but by understanding the early signs you can be aware of what to look out for, for yourself and your loved ones.
Asking others to repeat themselves, speak louder and slowly
The most common sign that your hearing is starting to deteriorate is having trouble following conversations. You may need to ask people to slow down and speak more clearly and louder to ensure you get all the information you need.
Turning up the volume
Another tell-tale sign is needing to increase the volume of the TV, radio and anything else you can change the sound on. This is something that is usually more noticeable to family and friends before those with hearing loss.
Missing everyday sounds
Can you still hear birds singing and trees swaying? These everyday sounds that register at higher frequencies are often the first sounds to disappear with hearing loss.
Getting tired from listening
When your hearing is compromised, it is more effort for your brain to interpret the sound it is receiving, which can leave you feeling exhausted after a conversation.
Ringing in your ears
If you are experiencing a ringing sound in your ears, or other noises such as buzzing or humming this is a condition known as tinnitus. Tinnitus is a common symptom in people who have hearing loss or other hearing problems.
If you or a loved one are experiencing any of the symptoms above or have any concerns about your hearing the best thing you can do is speak to one of our Audiologists for more information. We can advise the best course of action, whether this is a hearing assessment or hearing aid products to improve the hearing.
