Helping Loved Ones with Hearing Loss During Christmas hero image

The festive period is a time to celebrate and gather with family and friends, however if you have hearing loss family get togethers can be quite challenging. Struggling to hear what’s going on round the dinner table can be frustrating, leaving you feeling left out and missing all the fun.

Whether its listening to the silly jokes out of a Christmas cracker or enjoying karaoke at your works Christmas party you want to be able to hear everything and enjoy the moment. Here are our top tips to make the most of the festive period.

  • Quite often music is used to set the mood at festive events, but this doesn’t help those with hearing loss. Keep the music turned down so that everyone can be heard talking or if you can, turn it off completely.
  • Make sure the room you are in is nice and bright. Everyone will be visible making reading lips and visual cues much easier.
  • Where you can, position yourself at the table in a seat where someone can help guide you through the conversation or fill in the bits you might have missed.
  • During a conversation speak clearly, but don’t shout. If you have hearing aids, make sure you are wearing them, and they are set up correctly.
  • Have more than one room available to gather in, so that there is a quiet space to go to and talk without the distraction of background noise.
  • Use accessories such as a TV streamer and enjoy watching the TV with your loved ones without missing anything.

Christmas is one of the most sociable times of the year, and it is important to ensure that everyone enjoys it as much as possible. If you or a loved one has experienced hearing loss it is important to have your hearing checked. To arrange a hearing check please contact us today by emailing k or call 0333 3110905.
