10 Tips for Managing Hearing Loss
When you have hearing loss it is important to take good care of your ear health. By managing your hearing loss, you can reduce the impact it has on your daily lives and in some cases slow the progression of loss over time.
Here are our top 10 tips for managing your hearing loss:
1) Visit your audiologist regularly.
Whether you have visited for a wax removal, hearing assessment or hearing aid fitting it is important to attend your follow up and annual appointments. Our audiologists will assess your ear health as well as your hearing to ensure your ears are healthy and your aids are working as they should be.
2) Look after your hearing aids.
If you wear hearing aids, it is important to look after them to keep them working as they should and increase the longevity of the device. Make sure you clean them regularly, charge them up when required and adjust them should they require it.
3) Explore what your hearing aids can do.
Hearing aids now have many different functions that can benefit you in your daily life. This includes artificial intelligence that will adjust to different environments, health monitors, fall detection and more. Explore the different functions to get the most out of your aids for you and your family.
4) Optimise your hearing.
Even with hearing aids you can optimise your hearing day to day. This can be as simple as facing the person you are talking to, moving to a location with less background noise and adjusting your hearing aids for the environment you are in.
5) Monitor changes to your hearing.
Like with your vision, if you notice any changes to your hearing such as new issues, or your hearing getting worse it is important to book an appointment with your audiologist. Leaving the problem could lead to further issues, including further loss of hearing.
6) Eat a balanced diet.
A balanced diet can benefit our bodies in many ways, including your ear health. Much like other organs in the body, ears need the right nutrition to support their function. Food high in potassium like bananas are key to combatting age-related hearing loss as the body’s potassium levels decrease as we age.
7) Limit exposure to loud noises.
Avoiding or limiting your exposure to loud noises is important to protect your hearing. Not only can experiencing loud sounds be uncomfortable, but it can also make your hearing loss worse. Using hearing protection such as ear defenders or ear plugs can help to protect your hearing from further damage or prevent hearing loss in the future.
8) Talk about your hearing loss.
It is important to talk about your hearing loss, whether this is with loved ones, your audiologist, GP or therapist. Hiding hearing loss is common, and often leads to frustration and mental health conditions. We understand that hearing loss can be distressing, however having support from friends, family and healthcare professionals can make things easier and more manageable.
9) Give it time.
We often find when people are diagnosed with hearing loss and fitted with their first pair of hearing aids, they find it difficult to adjust. Our biggest piece of advice is to give it time. It will take a while to get used to hearing loss and adjusting to your new level of hearing. Remember to give yourself compassion, and the time to adjust to your new way of living.
10) You are not alone.
If you are struggling with your hearing loss, you are not alone. Around 1 in 6 people in the UK are affected by some form of hearing loss. It can feel lonely when you start losing your hearing and you struggle to communicate with others like you were able to before. Working with your audiologist, you will be able to find a suitable solution to manage your hearing loss, reducing the impact it may have on your everyday life.
