National Audiology Awareness Month

As we approach the end of the National Audiology Awareness Month, it’s good to be reminded of some of the ways your hearing can be affected from daily activities to events such as festivals.

Currently around 1 in 6 adults within the UK are affected by some kind of hearing loss, with 8 million of these are aged over 60. Hearing loss is a factor as you age but this can be exacerbated by things such as loud noise exposure. Some symptoms of hearing loss can lead in the direction of an ear infection, earache, difficulty in one or both ears and a feeling of pressure within the ear can all be signs of an ear infection.

There are, however, more concerning issues that can happen to your ear including a perforated eardrum which can happen after an ear infection, an injury to the eardrum such as a blow to the ear or inserting an object like a cotton bud too deep or changes in pressure, such as flying or diving.

You could also be dealing with an issue like a build-up of earwax, which has similar symptoms that are mentioned above. Your hearing is a sense that many take for granted, especially when it comes to things such as concerts and festivals, as many won’t know that the noise generated is around 90-100 which puts your risk of hearing damage to under 5 minutes of exposure.

At The Ear Place we offer services such as Micro Suction Wax Removal, Tinnitus assessments and hearing protection so you can go about your daily life with a little more comfort when it comes to protecting your hearing.
